Like the Aeron itself, it is designed to fit you, not the other way around. Support the neck, not the skull
Closing the last gap in your posture
The correct place to support the head is the neck. A headrest that pushes the skull forward trains forward-head posture over time. Because the HR04’s depth is adjustable and lockable, you set it to fill the gap behind your neck exactly — completing the Aeron’s support line from your lower spine all the way to your head. Once tuned, it fits snugly enough that you can’t easily drift out of correct posture.

Tension adjustment
“My headrest doesn’t lock rigidly into place. Is something wrong?”
No — this is deliberate ergonomic design. The height and tilt actions are not meant to clamp the headrest rigidly. Your body should move throughout the day to maintain circulation, so the headrest is built to glide with you as you tilt, while staying supportive at the back of your neck.
The original design by its Israeli engineering team didn’t even have stepped adjustments — it was made to be fully fluid and responsive to movement.
If you prefer a firmer hold, tighten the tension screw shown here. It stiffens the rotation and slightly firms the up-down action.
Do not overtighten — excessive torque can crack the frame.

Classic or Remastered Aeron?
The Classic Aeron was phased out years ago. If your chair was purchased before 2016, it’s a Classic; a recent purchase is almost certainly a Remastered. The quickest tells are the mesh weave (the Remastered’s varies in tension zones) and the gearbox design under the seat.
Peace of mind
Will a headrest void my Herman Miller warranty?
Based on the investigation below, a headrest only jeopardises the warranty if it does structural damage to the chair — for example, drilling into the frame. None of the headrests we carry drill anything: the Engineered Now and PosturePilot Ergonomic Aeron Headrests secure with a simple bolt clamp, and the PosturePilot even adds cushion pads so it’s hard to find evidence a headrest was ever attached.
